The Medical Assisting Program prepares the student to be able to perform routing duties within the offices of many types of health professionals, including physicians, chiropractors, podiatrists, and others.
The program will teach the students to perform tasks under the direct supervision of the physician in the office and delegated by the doctor or supervising healthcare professional. They will be trained in first aid skills and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, collecting, and preparing lab specimens, and maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment. They may administer various types of medications and perform x-ray examinations, electrocardiograms and prepare patients for x-ray evaluations. They may also assist in minor surgical procedures, prepare sterile trays, and perform autoclave sterilization procedures for instruments. Medical assistants must know how to take medical histories from patients, patient teaching, and obtain and record vital signs.
The program includes 160 externship hours. After successful completion of the program, the student is eligible to take the certification examination for Clinical and Administrative Medical Assistants from the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
